Through the use of her dance magic, Shantae can transform into various forms you unlock. But while that’s her main move, it’s far from her party trick. Shantae’s main way of combating enemies is (hilariously) her hair which she can use to whip opponents and may be (also hilariously) upgraded through buying shampoo and conditioner from the hub world’s shop. It’s your basic jumping, climbing, run to the right, platformer scenario. Helped by the strong, very self-aware writing that brings in plenty of humour and 4 th wall breaks. It kind of feels like I’m playing a Saturday morning cartoon show. Each level has its own self-contained story with a beginning middle and end. There is an overarching plot in the background, but most of the game feels rather episodic. Gods, aliens, vampires, demons, monsters, sentient gemstones and now genies. And for whatever reason, it is her duty to protect Sequin Land from the many villains that inhabit it, through her inherited magical powers and the help of her friends. Her father being human and mother being a genie. The game stars Shantae, who as the title implies is a half genie. Is this a diamond in the rough? Or just more sand? Let’s find out. Specifically, I played the Ultimate Edition which includes the various DLC that have come out for it, all of which I will be covering to some degree. Being in the latter, I decided to rent Shantae ½ Genie Hero, the latest game in the series by Wayforward and find out more for myself. I was first made aware to the character Shantae when I heard buzz about her being a potential new fighter in the upcoming Super Smash Bros game. Well, since this has officially been the most successful year for us ever (as we’ve suddenly become REALLY popular in South Korea for some reason) we’re gonna continue this trend of inconsistency by doing a video game review!īecause a critic known for mostly reviewing movies suddenly trying to tackle a completely different format of entertainment always ends well, right? We’ve certainly switched up the output this year, haven’t we? Movies, TV shows, web-based movies and even the audio of a stage show. And now for something completely different. (Since the blog works on a budget of nothing…. UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!
